Parts Work

What Is Parts Work Therapy? Understanding the Inner Critic, the People-Pleaser and the Part That Wants Rest

October 28, 2026 · 6 min read

Have you ever said "part of me wants to rest, but part of me feels guilty"? That simple sentence is the heart of parts work. Most of us already talk about ourselves this way. Parts work therapy takes that language seriously.

What parts work is

Parts work is an approach that sees the mind as made up of different parts, each with its own feelings, beliefs and job. None of them are bad. Even the parts that cause the most trouble usually started out trying to protect you.

Common parts you might recognize

  • The inner critic. It points out every flaw, often hoping that if it criticizes you first, no one else will.
  • The people-pleaser. It keeps everyone happy so conflict never gets close.
  • The achiever. It stays busy and productive so painful feelings stay out of reach.
  • The younger, hurting part. It holds old feelings of fear, loneliness or shame that the other parts work hard to keep quiet.

Why fighting yourself doesn't work

When you try to silence the inner critic or force yourself to relax, the protective parts usually push back harder. Parts work invites curiosity instead. When a part feels understood, it often softens on its own.

How parts work helps anxiety and trauma

Anxiety is often a protective part working overtime. Trauma can leave younger parts stuck in old moments. In sessions, we get to know these parts, learn what they're afraid of, and help them trust that you're safe now. I often combine parts work with somatic awareness and EMDR, so the change happens in the body as well as in understanding.

A simple practice to try

Next time you notice a strong reaction, pause and ask: "What part of me is this? What is it worried would happen if it stopped?" You don't need to fix anything. Just listening is a start.
