How to Use a Superbill for Therapy and Get Reimbursed Out of Network

October 15, 2026 · 6 min read

Finding the right therapist and then learning they don't take your insurance can feel like a dead end. It often isn't. Many plans include out-of-network benefits, and a superbill is how you use them.

What a superbill is

A superbill is a detailed receipt for therapy. It lists the dates of your sessions, the type of service, the fee you paid, and the information your insurer needs to process a claim. You pay me directly, then submit the superbill to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.

Why some people choose private pay

  • More privacy. Fewer people and systems are involved in decisions about your care.
  • Care shaped by you. Session frequency and the length of treatment are decided together, not by a plan's limits.
  • Specialized fit. You can choose a therapist for their training and approach, not only for who is in network.

Questions to ask your insurance company

Call the member services number on the back of your card and ask:

  • Do I have out-of-network benefits for outpatient mental health?
  • What is my out-of-network deductible, and how much of it have I met?
  • What percentage of the allowed amount is reimbursed after the deductible?
  • Is there a limit on the number of sessions per year?
  • Do telehealth sessions qualify?
  • How do I submit a claim, online portal, app, or mail?

Write down the date, the representative's name, and a reference number for the call.

How to submit a superbill

  1. Pay for your sessions as usual.
  2. Request your superbill, usually monthly.
  3. Upload it through your insurer's member portal or claim form.
  4. Watch for an explanation of benefits and reimbursement by check or direct deposit.

Good to know

Reimbursement is never guaranteed, and every plan is different. Some people with a high deductible use an HSA or FSA card to pay for sessions instead. Either way, knowing your benefits up front helps you plan.
