What anxiety can feel like
Anxiety is not always panic attacks. Often it looks like overthinking every conversation, running through to-do lists at night, struggling to rest, or feeling like you have to hold everything together so nothing falls apart.
Many of the people I work with have high-functioning anxiety. They are capable, reliable and successful, and no one would guess how hard their mind and body are working just to keep going.
Anxiety therapy may help if you
- Overthink, replay conversations, or worry about what others think
- Feel tense, restless, or unable to fully relax even on days off
- Struggle with sleep because your mind won’t turn off
- Rely on perfectionism, productivity, or people-pleasing to feel okay
- Feel easily overwhelmed, irritable, or shut down
- Know your anxiety has roots in the past, but still feel stuck in it
Why nervous system regulation matters
Anxiety lives in the body, not just in your thoughts. When your nervous system has learned that the world is unpredictable, it stays on alert: tight shoulders, shallow breathing, a racing heart, a stomach in knots. Telling yourself to relax rarely works because the alarm is coming from below conscious thought.
Nervous system regulation is about helping your body learn, through experience, that it is safe enough to settle. Over time you build a wider window where you can feel stress without being swept away by it.
How I work with anxiety
We start by noticing what your anxiety is trying to do for you. Often it is a protective part working hard to keep you safe, prepared, or liked. With parts work, we get to know that part instead of fighting it.
I bring in somatic tools to help you notice and shift what is happening in your body in real time, and EMDR to work with the earlier experiences that taught your system to stay on guard. The goal is not just coping skills, but real, lasting calm.
Fees and superbills
Sessions are $150 for 50 minutes, held online for adults in Florida, Rhode Island, Maine, Connecticut, Maryland and South Carolina. I am private pay and don’t bill insurance directly, but I can send a superbill you can submit for possible out-of-network reimbursement. A limited number of sliding scale spots are available.
How to use a superbill for therapyCommon questions
What is high-functioning anxiety?
It is anxiety that hides behind achievement. You keep showing up and getting things done, but inside you feel driven by worry, pressure, or fear of falling short.
What does nervous system regulation look like in a session?
It might mean pausing to notice your breath or posture, finding where you feel calm in your body, or practicing small shifts that help you settle. We go slowly and always follow what feels okay for you.
Can EMDR help with anxiety?
Yes. When anxiety is tied to earlier experiences or beliefs like “I have to be perfect to be safe,” EMDR can help those roots lose their charge.
Is online anxiety therapy effective?
Yes. Many people find it easier to relax and open up from home. Sessions are held by secure video for adults in the six states where I am licensed.
