What is complex trauma?
Complex trauma comes from repeated or ongoing experiences, rather than one single event. It often happens in childhood, inside relationships that were supposed to feel safe: emotional neglect, criticism, chaos at home, a caregiver who was unavailable or unpredictable.
When these experiences pile up, they can lead to what is called complex PTSD (C-PTSD). It can show up as a harsh inner critic, trouble trusting people, feeling numb or overwhelmed, or always bracing for something to go wrong.
Signs of complex trauma or C-PTSD
- A harsh inner critic or deep sense of shame
- Feeling on guard, tense, or unable to fully relax
- Trouble trusting others or feeling close in relationships
- People-pleasing, perfectionism, or losing yourself in others
- Feeling numb, disconnected, or overwhelmed by emotions
- Knowing your childhood shaped you, but not knowing how to change it
Attachment wounds and relationships
Complex trauma and attachment wounds often go hand in hand. You might find closeness confusing or exhausting, worry that people will leave, or pull away the moment someone gets close. These patterns made sense once. They were how you stayed safe.
In therapy we get curious about those patterns without judgment, and slowly build a felt sense of safety, first with yourself and then with others.
How I work with complex trauma
Healing complex trauma is not about reliving everything. We go at a pace that keeps you resourced rather than flooded. I use EMDR to help painful memories and beliefs soften, parts work to understand and care for the protective parts of you, and somatic awareness to help your nervous system learn it can settle.
Early sessions focus on stability and trust. As you feel more grounded, we begin to work with the experiences underneath.
Fees and superbills
Sessions are $150 for 50 minutes, held online for adults in Florida, Rhode Island, Maine, Connecticut, Maryland and South Carolina. I am private pay and don’t bill insurance directly, but I can send a superbill you can submit for possible out-of-network reimbursement. A limited number of sliding scale spots are available.
How to use a superbill for therapyCommon questions
What is the difference between PTSD and complex PTSD?
PTSD usually follows a specific event. Complex PTSD comes from repeated or long-term experiences and often affects how you see yourself and relate to others, not just how you react to reminders.
Do I need a diagnosis to start therapy?
No. Many people I work with have never been diagnosed. If what you read here feels familiar, that is enough reason to reach out.
How long does complex trauma therapy take?
Complex trauma usually takes longer than single event trauma because it developed over time. Most people notice meaningful shifts along the way, and we check in regularly about your goals.
Can complex trauma therapy be done online?
Yes. Many clients find it easier to open up from their own space. Sessions are held by secure video for adults in the six states where I am licensed.
