7 Signs of High-Functioning Anxiety (That Everyone Else Calls 'Being Driven')

July 14, 2026 · 6 min read

From the outside, high-functioning anxiety can look a lot like success. You meet deadlines, remember birthdays, and answer the message before it finishes buzzing. On the inside, it can feel like you never get to put anything down.

What high-functioning anxiety actually is

High-functioning anxiety isn't a formal diagnosis. It's a way of describing anxiety that shows up as doing more rather than doing less. Instead of avoidance, the anxiety turns into over-preparation, over-apologizing, and over-delivering.

Seven signs to look for

  • You replay conversations. Hours later, you're still editing something you said.
  • Rest feels like risk. Sitting still brings a low hum of guilt or dread.
  • You over-prepare. Three backup plans for a casual meeting.
  • Reassurance doesn't stick. Praise is comforting for about an hour.
  • Your body keeps score. Jaw tension, shallow breathing, stomach issues, trouble falling asleep.
  • You say yes automatically. The no arrives only after you've already committed.
  • You can't tell if you're tired or just anxious. The two blur together.

Why "just relax" doesn't work

If achievement is how your nervous system learned to feel safe, slowing down feels genuinely unsafe. That's not a willpower problem. It's a pattern that made sense at some point in your life and is now costing you more than it protects.

What therapy can look like

In our work together, we slow the pattern down enough to see it: what triggers it, what it's protecting, and what happens when you experiment with doing less. Using approaches like EMDR and parts work, we go beneath the surface to the beliefs driving the pressure, so change lasts longer than a good week.

If this sounds familiar, you don't have to keep white-knuckling it. Reach out for a free 15-minute consultation and we can talk about what support could look like.
